FUNK REVIVAL: Sounds From The Subtropics
In the early 1970’s, way down south, Cuban immigrants and their sons and daughters assimilated the sounds of American funk and soon arrived at their own version. This CD is the first of its kind to explore this fertile musical scene which, up until now, has only been available to the collector on 12” vinyl or 7” wax. The 7 “ singles “Cookie Crumbs”, “Soul Freedom”, “Quit Jivin’”, “Nana”, “Los Feligreses” and others on this compilation, have been staples on the underground “rare funk” scene for years and sell for as much as $650 per disc on the international collector’s market. The collection features 18 slabs of rare funk from the subtropics presented together for the first time on CD.
Cookie Crumbs: The Best Of Ray & His Court
The late sixties and early seventies proved to be a fertile era for the Miami music scene. Those in the know, know that it was the heavy influx of Cuban musicians who had recently migrated to Miami from their homeland as being responsible for upping the musical ante. Ray Fernandez was the first Cuban musician to incorporate American funk and soul rhythms into the Cuban mix and was truly the “King” of the Miami Cuban music community. Many Miami musicians who are well renowned today have, at one time or another, passed through Ray’s court. Prime cuts of rare-groove funk recorded from the original master tapes including the hits “Cookie Crumbs” and “Soul Freedom” - The complete 1974 album including rare and unreleased tracks.
Celtic Women Of Song
The classic tunes presented in this collection were performed by some of the most influential women in the history of Celtic song, recorded in the mid 1950’s to the early 1960’s when the revival of Celtic music was in full swing. The sincerity of their interpretations and their persistence in the preservation of these great forms are the reason why these wonderful ancient melodies survive today and sound as fresh as they do. Featuring Celtic icons Mary O’Hara, Isla Cameron, Joan Clancy, Sarah Makem and more.
King Curtis - Azure
It’s very unlikely that another saxophonist existed in the entirety of New York City that was as busy in the recording studio as King Curtis was in 1960 - and for that matter, during the years before and after. His diamond-hard yakety solos were crucial to the rock and roll success story of the Coasters, and King’s instantly recognizable horn graced countless more ‘50s and ‘60s R&B platters as both bandleader and sideman. But Curtis was nothing if not a versatile presence in the studio. He was developing a solid reputation within the jazz field at the dawn of the decade, waxing albums for Prestige with the likes of Nat Adderley, Wynton Kelly, and Oliver Nelson in support. These extremely rare sessions making their CD debut feature a cast of jazz greats including Ernie Royal, Panama Francis, Billy Bauer, Mundell Lowe, Marshall Royal and Garvin Bushell.
John Jacob Niles - The Ballads of John Jacob Niles
As featured in the recent Martin Scorcese directed Bob Dylan documentary “No Direction Home”, John Jacob Niles was a major influence and key progenitor of the 1950’s folk resurgence in America. Historian, musicologist, performance artist - Niles was one of the first American folk artists to take traditional material and completely make it his own, years before a young Bob Dylan started channeling Woody Guthrie. Today the late, great John Jacob Niles is admired by a new generation of folk enthusiasts and will no doubt inspire generations to come. “The Ballads of John Jacob Niles” appears for the first time on this special 2 CD set with restored original LP artwork and extensive liner notes. Southern Gothic folk at its finest.
